Which updates apply?

Currently using WinXP Home edition. All updates installed up until a week or
so ago. At this time I do not wish to apply the Windows Internet Explorer
7.0 for Windows XP update patch. When I go to the update site I see several
update patches. If I do not want to install IE 7 patch, how can a person
know what patches apply to the operating system before applying the IE 7.0
patch. I want to keep my system updated, but do not want to update to IE 7.0
at this time. Are any of these updates for the operating system prior to IE
7.0? I am hearing about non compatable issues with the IE 7.0 update.

Windows update reads your system. It will only offer you updates applicable
to your current system. If you do not want IE7, de-select it, then continue
to apply all the others.
