which template was used?

I've got to deal with some legacy documents that were created by other
writers using several old templates. Is there a way I can tell which template
is attached to a document?

You should find this on the Summary tab of File | Properties.

File > Properties only shows the name of the template - which may be enough
for you.
Tools > Templates and Addins should show the full path (except for Normal).
