Which printer would you pick from here?

I have only used laser HP printer and HP all-in-one (a little bit) and
so have no clue about other printers. I need to buy one to give to
someone ..for basic printing. The whole idea is so that I won't have
to print direction and what not for that person who can't print on
the printer that's on the wireless network where he lives. I don't
know (and don't care anymore) to check things in that house.

I just need a decent printer to give to this person. Printer shouldn't
jam and smear; cartridge should last

Locals are selling - a used HP 5610 All-in-one for $60 and new HP
D1341 deskjet for $50.
I can bargain the latter one above but I need to knwo whether it is a
decent printer or not.

Or should I choose from here: http://tinyurl.com/yuuqc5 and if so,
which one?

If you don't think I should bother anythign below $100, plase say so.

I would get the HP DeskJet 6540. It uses large black cartridges (rated over
800 pages text) and is fast. It is a sturdy printer and should be trouble
free.

Without exception, the cheap printers are the most expensive to operate. The
Canon IP4300 is an extremely good value both in terms of cost and cost to
operate. Personally, I wouldn't own an HP printer any more, the drivers are
getting really bad and buggy. Plus the Canon will come with full tanks.

If it is truly new than that is the way to go.

A better bet is to buy a Canon IP4300 (on sale at many places and often)
for around $80.00. The ink is top grade, it prints duplex on both sides
of the paper automatically without a problem, has twin paper trays and
the print quality is great. I also have an HP. The HP has a better
draft mode but the paper handling of the Canon is superior. It has 5
ink tanks. The photo quality of Canon is better than HP and the text
quality is almost as good in the best mode but it is much faster.

If I had to choose between them I would choose Canon.

A printer repair shop owner that I have gone last year suggested me
cannon for inkjet printers. My brother (quite abit older) was more
interested than I thought he would be (probably he was sick of having
to use the primary pc from where the wireless network was created
instead of his laptop. So I have decided to buy a new one for him. I
was thinking Canon PIXMA iP1700 but now, am thinking Canon IP4300.
But, he is not going to use it for photos *at all*. So which one would
be a better way w.r.t operating cost?

The IP1700 is trash. The IP4300 is the best way to go. It has 5
separate ink tanks, dual paper feeds, prints duplex and is fast.

G'day mate,

How would you rate the IP4300 versus the MP530? Any experience?

Cheers, Phred.

I think that the print engine is about the same but I do not like multi
function devices for the following reasons:

You usually do not get the best of breed of both a scanner and printer

When one device goes you have remaining a bloated device that needs to
be replaced

It costs more than separates if you look for the higher end models

The only advantages are:

Space if that is crticial

An auto document feeder only on the higher models.

I recomend Epson scanners and the Canon IP4300.

Thanks very much for your response, mate. You got it in one!

Actually, I'm really only looking for a laser photocopier/printer
combo, but if they want to throw in a scanner I'll accept it (I don't
have a scanner at the moment). What does piss me off with the MFCs
that I've found available here in Oz is that they all seem to be the
"with fax" models, so I'll have to pay for that too, and I don't need
or want it! :-(

While I think "laser" is probably the only realistic option for me
(TCO issues) a good ink-based colour unit would have some appeal if
the cost of plain B&W copying and printing was somewhere near the
laser cost per page. The MP530 had good local reviews (_Aust. PC
User_ about Oct 2006 IIRC) which is why I asked about it here.
However, I can't find detail on B&W output cost, only for colour.

Some of the laser models I've looked at seem to be around 3 to 4c
(Australian) per page for toner; then I guess you need to add
something for the drum replacement on most(?) models too. Though
printer models such as the HP LJ5MP and my now dead 6L Pro use a
drum/toner combo that still works out in that 3 to 4c range IIRC.
An auto document feeder only on the higher models.

I think you can also use that for autofeed to the scanner on the
MP530. The ability to conveniently scan B&W documents could reduce my
need for copying, so that's another consideration for making a choice.
I recomend Epson scanners and the Canon IP4300.

I've heard Canon have a very good scanner for photographic slides.

Cheers, Phred.

A photo copier is a printer and a scanner that is combined in one device.

The addition of a modem and some fax software is not very much.

I think you should know that this recommender is affiliated with HP so
you need to take that into account when you make your decision. I do
not know what your needs are but I like the inexpensive Canon IP4300. I
also use HP Deskjets and while I do like them the ink is far more
expenseive than Canon and the paper handling is no where as good.
