Which printer to buy ?

From my observation, my canon (i550) uses black if printing pure text and as
you say, in low or draft mode. If you think again, you can't get light grey
from black ink...
And of course, black is used for darkening,too.

I think you can use black to print light gray if you use ditering.

i guess you have tubes running - where, since head is moving?

Yup! a long set of tubes connected between the modified ink cartridges to
a set of bottles which hold ink. The bottles sit outside of the printer
right next to the printer. The below is one of few companies making CIS
(about 3-4 companies)

Their prices go up and down pretty often (few times a week or so), and I

You can check the CIS for Canon there too. Just check the MENU and pick
whatever you want to see
