Longevity of Canon inkjets?

D

DK

I have ip4000R which suits me in every respect and I would
like to keep it for as long as I can. Apparently, printhead has a
limited lifespan. No problem, I can buy one for $55 right now.

However, I am not printing that much so it is possible that
something else breaks before the original printhead goes.
So, I would like to get a very crude estimate of the two thigns:

1. What is the typical lifetime of Canon printheads? (Say, in
total number of pages printed).
2. How reliable is the rest of the printer? Assuming printhead
is taken care of, how long can I expect the printer to be in
the original perfect working order?

Thanks,

DK

If you use Canon ink the printhead should last. If you use generic ink
plan on buying a bunch

I remember reading in a newsgroup that the heads are rated for 35K pages.
I have the IP4000 and it has printed at least 20K and all is going fine.
Not to appease anyone but I have strictly used OEM inks.

There's really no predictable lifespan for heads. they last as long as they
last. I have a spare on the shelf for my IP4000, but haven't needed it.
Given the quality of this printer, and the options for new ones with chipped
tanks, I intend to keep it going till it falls apart.
Apart from the head, and assuming you don't do anything nasty to it, the
next likely problem you might face is paper feed problems, which aren't too
hard to sort out.

That why it is lasting.

A printer or a printhead will fail when it wants to, regardless of the
inks or paper you use. I had a printhead AND the paper feed fail for an
i860 after just a month of use. Unbelievable! Everything was replaced
and is still working 2 years later - and still with aftermarket inks!
My other printers - an iP5000 is now in its 3rd year with aftermarket
inks, and an iP4000 well into its second. Secretly, I'm kinda hopin' one
will soon die so I can get a later model. But.... like I said, they have
their own schedule when they choose to go. They've all been working so
great these last few years that It'd be foolish to part with a
"non-lemon" printer!

Thanks everyone who replied! I guess I'll still buy a backup printhead
for the peace of mind and just hope the rest of the printer holds for
the life of two printheads.

The ease and low cost of refilling with this printer more than offsets
an extra $55 spent.

Actually if you take right care of your Canon printer I suspect the print
head will last a very long time. The key is to make sure the print head
is never starved of ink. If you keep an eye on the ink flow and make sure
the print head is never short of ink to print it will last a very long time.

It can be fatal to the print head if it does not get enough ink to print, as well
as to cool the heaters in the nozzles.

Correct viscosity of ink and proper capillarity of the sponge in the cartridge
are two main elements to provide proper ink flow to the print head.

The print head will be able to handle light load such as printing color text
and heavy load such as printing photos only if the ink flow is right.

It is an enormous joy when you see your printer being able to keep printing
and never give slight problem to bother you, especially when you use 3rd
party ink and ink cartridges.

I have printed more than a full box of letter sized paper and two years
after getting my Canon printer it still shows no sign of a slight problem.
That's 5000 sheets of paper.

None of the above test longevity of printers. Any "schoolboy" knows this.
