Which IDE Drivers to Load

M

Mark Milliman

I was troubleshooting another problem with my computer yesterday when I
noticed that my event log had an error entry when it was booting. The log
reports error ID 7026 saying that atapi, intelide, and pciide were not
loading at boot time. This was a surprise to me since all of my drives are
working correctly. I probed msinfo32 for the answer (listing below), and I
found that alternate drivers were loading which explains why my drives are
working fine.

Now I am wondering which drivers should be loading for optimal performance.
My motherboard has two IDE controllers. On the first one I have a parallel
ATA/100 drive, and on the second one I have to new DVD/CD drives. I am
planning on adding another hard drive most likely an ATA/133 even though my
controllers max out at 100 MHz.

Should XP use the intelide, atapi, and pciide drivers over the current ones
for best performance? If so, then how do I get those drivers to install and
load properly? I ran the Intel driver setup program without any affect. If
I have the best performing drivers, how do I remove the instructions to load
these other drivers?

So far I have not been able to find any articles in the MSKB or through
Google.

Thanks,
Mark

I figured out that the drivers loading are part of the Intel Application
Accelerator. I always wondered what that program did. Since everything is
working fine and the drivers indicate that the drives are operating at their
maximum transfer rate, I am going to leave them along. Now I need to figure
out how to stop atapi, intelide, and pciide from attempting to load. The
simplest method is to disable them in device manager, but I would really
like to remove them. Should I just leave them in or remove them? How would
I remove them?

Wesley:

Thanks for your response. That article is what tipped me off to knowing
that I was using IAA instead of the standard IDE drivers. My question now
is how do I stop XP from trying to load the standard IDE drivers on boot?
Everytime I reboot an error entry is place in the event log when they fail
to load. Right now the are disabled through the Device Manager. Is that
they best way stop them from loading. It does stop the event log message.

Thanks,
Mark
