Which ATI card is comparable to a Ti4400?

Is an ATI 9800 PRO 128MB a significant enough upgrade to invest $250 in now,
or should I wait until the next generation of cards are released? I play
games like BF1942, Far Cry, etc. Thank you in advance.

Specs:
Alienware Area 51
Intel P4 2.26
512 RDRAM
SB Audigy 2

If you use FSAA and anisotropic filtering; yes sure. You can get the same
frames with that on, on the 9800 Pro, as you het with your 4400, with them
turned off.

I put my Ti4400 in my kids' computer when I got my 9800 Pro. Both cards are
OC'd. 9800 is faster, but not double the speed or anything like that. Turn
on some fsaa and AF, and then you notice the difference. I'd say it's about
15fps -20fps faster in NR2003 with my settings.
They're about $210 shipped at newegg.

Definitly!

I have an ati 9800 Pro..it rocks! Unreal Tournament..every option on
high...yes..every option. And still 60fps. ... ouch!

And Far Cry... ah.. a game using allot of shaders! The ati 9800 Pro
has the best shaders is town! ( okay the XT is slightly faster.. ) and
should give you enough performance.

And it's very future proof! It's sure that if more games come out that
use pixel shaders allot, the 9800 Pro still will be capable to perform
well.

And indeed... they are getting dead cheap!

Remember that the next gen cards are going to need a new MB to run on
because they're going to be using the new PCExpress bus.So if you plan on
upgrading your MB soon then wait. But you won't be sorry if you go ahead and
spend $215 at Newegg for a 9800Pro. I just switched from a Ti-4200 and it's
like night and day when it comes to game quality. Once you see a 9800Pro in
action you'll never look back. Also you'll be very happy with the way your
desktop will look because ATI stomps Nvidia when it comes to 2D.

nvidia have left behind the poor 2d problem they had, in the past in most
cases.

Really? Because I noticed a big difference when I went from my Asus Ti-4200
to my 9800Pro. I've had three Nvidia cards with my current monitor , a first
gen Geforce, a G3 and the 4200, none of them did 2D as well as my 9800Pro.

I've just got a 9800pro and was looking very closely at an 5900XT however I
agree that ATI win on the 2D and whilst for the hardened gamer this might
not be quite so important for anyone spending more time using 2D than
gaming, it is. I would be intrested in seeing the 5900XT up and running but
simply couldn't take the risk.

You made a wise decision going with the 9800Pro. Have fun cracking up the AA
and seeing what your games really look like!
In some games the difference is amazing. NFS Hot Pursut 2 is one example. I
played the game a lot with my old Ti-4200 and thought the game looked pretty
good. But when I loaded it with my new 9800Pro with 4xAA and 4x Aniso turned
on, I nearly fell out of my chair. The 9800Pro renders the game so much
better then the 4200 it was just amazing. I swear I drove around in a level
I'd played many times before and I really wasn't sure that it was the same
level.
You're going to love your card. I subject you go to ati.com and DL there
"Chimp" ,"Pipedream" ,"Caves" ,"Ark" and "DebevecRNL" demos. They also have
a really cool screen saver called "Gargoyle" It's a chrome Gargoyle with a
cool clock in the background. Enjoy! JLC

Yes, but the video-card manufacturers are not stupid. The card-upgrade
business is huge ! Ati will have both types of GPU available
simultaneously for the next couple of years. And nVidia is sticking
with AGP architecture for their new family, with a PCI-Express <--->
AGP bridge chip.
