which anti-virus software to purchase?

You can never have enough protection these days.

I use ZoneAlarm as a firewall to alert me to communication coming and going
from the web.
I use WinPatrol to let me know if some new program has been added without my
express permission.

Both have free versions that do a great job and don't completely take over
your machine slowing down it's normal operation. They both have easy
interfaces that will help you to understand what's happening on your system.

Try the free versions and if you like them show support and get the Pro/PLUS
versions.

Hi Folks:

I just installed the 15 day trial of Norton Anti-Virus professional edition.
Seems ok. However, after 15 days, I will uninstall it and then make a
decision on what to buy. They want $69 for it and $49 for the minimal
edition.

I notice McAfee has their VirusScanOnline for $34.95?

Which of the 2 is better and is the VirusScanOnline adequate enough to trap
all viruses?

Only reason I have the trial version Norton anti-virus is that I bought
Norton anti-virus back in 1998 and it seemed ok then.
However, judging from the posts here, Norton anti-virus does not seem too
popular :)

True. There are many people completely bereft of common sense who fail
to patch vulnerabilities discovered weeks before they're taken
advantage of and who also dowload files from dodgy places and open up
attachemtns from dodgy e-mails.

I run no firewall or AV software. Not had an infection or successful
hack in 7 years or even the new worm. Then again I know how to
configure my OS.

Of the two, Norton would be my choice. However, allow me to point you
to a program called NOD (www.nod.com). Superior to either in just
about every way. You're going to have much Symantec debris left in
your registry (I'm assuming your running XP) when you uninstall
Norton.

Why dont you try McAfee VirusScan ASaP?

You can get a free 15 Day trial from the website, download and install at
same time.
