Where to buy upgrade to 2003?

I am one of the "little folks" who uses Front Page only for one website for a
small non-profit corporation that I serve as board member. I was shocked
today to find out that Front Page is being phased with no future upgrades.
At first glance, Expressions seems more difficult than Front Page and more
geared to the professional web designer, not someone like me. I would
appreciate any comments about this. Also, I am considering simply upgrading
from 2000 to 2003. Where can I purchase Front Page 2003? Thanks!

FrontPage 2003 is the last version of FrontPage. It will continue to be
supported by Microsoft until January 2011, full support until Jan 2009.

FrontPage extensions are only supported on Windows 2003 servers- other
server types (Unix, Windows 2000) have no support for extensions other
than that given by hosts.

FrontPage has been replaced by Expression Web and SharePoint Designer.
Expression Web is aimed at standards compliant web sites, and has
limited support for FrontPage components. SharePoint Designer is aimed
at SharePoint websites, but has more support for FrontPage Components.
Neither program has any support for VML graphics (WordArt, ShapeArt,
TextBoxes and objects created using the Drawing toolbar).

Expression Web is described as being for the professional, but in my
opinion it is suitable for experienced FrontPage users. Experienced
here means they have some knowledge of HTML and CSS. It is possible to
build good web sites with EW without this knowledge - but it is much
easier with it.

A trial for Expression Web is available from
http://www.microsoft.com/expression/products/download.aspx?key=web
I suggest use the trial and see for yourself.` Make a backup of your
existing web site and play with that in EW. FrontPage on your PC will
not be affected.

Do not forget the product key obtainable from a link on that page.

You could probably get a copy over on eBay, maybe even some closeout
software vendor but not through official channels since it's been replaced.

Give EW a try though. The trial version is downloadable and the upgrade from
any version of FP is only about $90. It also puts out much more compliant
HTML code than any version of FP did and has hidden or removed a lot of the
features that were more problematic for FP users in they helped an FP user
inadvertantly create sites that didn't work well cross-browser.

Thanks so much for the information. It is most helpful. I still have doubts
about my ability to use Expression Web since I don't qualify as experienced -
knowledge of HTML and CSS. "Ignorance is bliss" so they say and I have been
happy with FrontPage for my one web site. I was in the process of buiilding
a second one yesterday when I learned about FrontPage ending.

Thanks for the information. I will continue to think about EW and perhaps
will download the trial to have a look.

Let's say, for an example, a person downloads the trial version of EW and
uses it on his PC based FrontPage 2003 web, but decides to not use EW.

Given that there are a lot of interal pointers and files used by FrontPage
2003 to keep itsefl functional: Does the use of EW on the PC based FrontPage
web destroy or corrupt files necessary for FrontPage to be functional again
with that web?

What problems might one expect after reverting to Frontpage 2003 after a
trial use of EW?

Luckily here, since EW is not considered a version of FP, a lot of issues of
running different versions of an app won't apply. The only thing you need to
worry about is when installing EW to make sure you don't install any shared
office components such as document converters and viewers, just the core
product. The reason is, typically these programs share some functionality
with the most recent version of Office. In EW's case, that would be Office
2007, but in FP's case, that would be Office 2003. This would cause a
conflict because installing EW with these components would set the new
shared components as the default, messing up FP 2003 which is looking for
the Office 2003 shared components instead.

Sometimes, if not usually, when one uses software other than the normal
software to process a file, you run the risk of "contaminating" the file.

That is what I fear could happen to my FrontPage 2003 wbe/subweb files &
folders if I process them using a trial version ( or even a full purchased
version ) of EW and then want to revert back to using Frontpage, for
whatever reason.

One could create a duplicate set of folders etc. But, in my case, this
requires lots of space, since the web/subweb structure is large. And there
is a limitation barrier in that the web MUST be device "E:/" because that is
the target of a whole bunch of complicated macros that create HTML files out
of a WordPerfect database.

So, the idea of using a trial version of EW on just a part of the web/subweb
is . . hmmm . . . questionable . . dunno in my mind.

I dont use FrontPage 2003 Shared Borders. But do use Insert component page.
And in a few cases use the photogallery.

Is using a trial version of EW an easy process from which one can retreat to
FrontPage 2003 without major problems?
