Where manually download VIA Rhine Ethernet hotfix on Microsoft site?

I run XP Pro+SP1. When I try and install the Microsoft hotfix for
the 'VIA Rhine Ethernet Adapter' it fails to get applied.

Seems the problem is known by VIA and Micorsoft:

"We are aware of this issue and we're following up
with Microsoft for them to resolve the issue.

The fix: Go to the Windows update website and scan
for optional updates. The VIA Rhine 2 Faster Ethernet
Controller should be listed as an option. Download it
and install via the Windows update website instead of
via the automatic update notification and it will work"

http://forums.viaarena.com/messageview.aspx?catid=3
&threadid=63606&enterthread=y

However when I go to the Microsoft update site at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/default.mspx
then I can not find this to download.

You should try searching the MS Download Center website.
The link is http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/

Scroll down the page to see the "Search for a Download".

That link you have given me is substantially the same as the one I
was using.

For some reason it seemt that the Microsoft search facility can
not locate this patch. And yet I know it is a patch which
Microsoft provides.

Yes I have tried that website and the download does not appear to
be there.

I challenge you to find it there.

Why would I want to since I don't have the hardware that needs that
driver?

According to the link you gave, AU was giving notification for the "VIA
Technologies, Inc. network software update released on December 12
2003." Why would you want to install that old driver in the first
place, moron?

Oh, and I did find the drivers in MS's Windows Update Catalog, so much
for your BS challenge.

The original post that you link to is for Win ME - not XP!!
However....
Have you actually tried the motherboard manufacturer's website for the
correct drivers for your system?
Download and run Everest Home Edition (www.lavalys.hu) and follow the link
that you'll find under the Motherboard|Motherboard heading - and download
the drivers from there.

Face saving nonsense. If you found it then you would copy the

The same problem seems to be occuring with XP: that the MS updater
keep on offering the hotfix.

The mobo website is out of date. The most recent VIA Rhine
Ethernet upgrade issued through Microsoft was on March 15th. My
mobo manufacturer is way behind that.

For some strange reason it seems as if VIA doesn't host these VIA
firmware upgrades on their own website

I did in fact install this and one on January 15th too but View
Installation History (on page http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/)
does not give me a reference number.

As I was mentioned before, it seems that the patch does not always
register with the resukt that it repeatedly presents itself for
installation. The problem is known by VIA and Microsoft and that
the fix is to manually download the MS patch,

The link works fine for me - although it does redirect now, to
http://www.lavalys.com/index.php?lang=hu (in Hungarian!) .
www.lavalys.nl also works - although it gives a slightly different interface

http://www.lavalys.com on its own gives the same interface as the one I get
from the .hu site (but in English)

What is your motherboard?
The VIA drivers for the Rhine chipset I have on this PC are not the latest
available - dated 9th April 2004, but work fine for me.
The latest available appear to be these
http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
(Please read the stuff there carefully!!)
from which the download can be got at
http://www.viaarena.com/downloads/drivers/LAN/VT6107_VT8231_VT8233_VT8235_VT8237v40FVIA.zip

FWIW, I always ignore suggestions to update drivers from MS - they are
nearly always a number of iterations behind the latest, and seem to cause
more problems than they solve. The date of release to Windows Update is NOT
the date on which the drivers were finalised - but the date that MS decided
to release them, and can be as much as a year after the public release by
the manufacturer!!

If you're not experiencing problems with your current drivers, there's no
need to update them anyhow!

I do know what I'm talking about. One of my old mobo's had the Via
Rhine . . . . It was retired over a year ago.

You obviously don't know how the Windows Update Catatlog works. But
here is a link to it in general, from there you'll need to figure the
rest out for your self.

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=8973

But you should understand that only FOOLS and MORONS install drivers
supplied by MS when the devise manufacturer supplies their own drivers.
Have fun finding and installing a two year out-of-date driver.

The principle and the hardware remains the same.

VIA Arena does not seem to have a newer single driver for this
problem. Or if it does I can not locate it. Which is why I posted.
If I knew everything, as you seem to suggest you do, then i would not
need the help I am asking for.

I posted in this thread that:

I have already given a link in my OP to where Fiona Gatt of Via said:

"install via the Windows update website instead
of via the automatic update notification and it will
work."

Of course I would rather use a Via driver from Via Arena but that is
not what Via have advised for this problem in the past. And I can't
locate the driver anywhere. Nor do I want to install a multi-
megabyte Via Arena driver update which possibly changes other Via
drivers on my system and presents me the risk of problems.

Actually, it should take you to a specific off-shoot of the Windows
Update site called the "Windows Update Catalog" where one option is to
"Find driver updates for hardware devices" for download only and
installation later.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp - This URL is the
for Version 4 of Windows Update.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp - This URL
is for the latest version of the Windows Update Catalog.

Most people, except for those that are MicroSychophants to the death,
that actually know what they are doing would rather not use a driver
provided by MS through Windows Update, as it often throws up erroneous
driver updates, and the drivers are just minimalistic to begin with.

Then you tell them that Windows Update tends to throw up erroneous
driver updates. But you won't tell them the reality of the situation.

I wasn't being abusive, I was practicing tough love, as most people
learn faster through negative reinforcement than by being touchy-feely
with them. All the touchy-feely method does is get them dependent on
being handheld through all their MicroProblems, and we know that your
company won't be doing that! These are peer-to-peer support groups, and
I volunteer my time to help. Don't like my methods, close down these
newsgroups and get your company to support their own products!

And we can all see that YOU didn't even try to help the OP, so which is
worse, no help at all, or getting help from an eccentric character?
This is an oasis for people where very generous, intelligent,

LOL! The is a newsgroup on the USENET, and no effin' "OASIS!" The
flame has a long and storied tradition on the USENET! And help comes in
many different packages, and so-far none of the "very generous,
intelligent, thoughtful volunteers" have been of much help, and if YOU
really wanted to help you would have tried to help the OP, and just
ignored me!

I don't believe in just giving a person a fish. I believe in teaching
them how to fish. You and your company just leave your customers to the
sharks!

I do not know what the driver does or how important it is. Do you
actually know how important the driver is which you suggest I ignore?
