Where is XP's Start Menu information

I've experimented with this quite a bit. I don't think there is an easy way
around creating an extra shortcut. You can drag any program to the pinned
area, but it does not create a normal shortcut. The problem comes if you
want to rename it. If you drag gpedit.msc to the Start Menu, it will show
up there and work just fine, but should you wish to rename the pinned icon
to gpedit or Group Policy Editor, the file back in system32 will get renamed
at the same time. I can't find any way around this undesirable behavior
other than the intermediate shortcut.

David Candy-This is exactly what I'm talking about. I want to have that
shortcut pinned without a duplicate elsewhere on the system.

What do you expect. So don't drag a shortcut, drag the file you want. I don't understand your problem. It keeps in that favourites key a list of what is dragged there. It can be anything.

How do you 'drag' gpedit.msc there? You drag a shortcut to the module.
There's no gpedit.exe to drag there.

For the third time, you can drag ANYTHING there. Whatever you drag there when you click it the default verb is run. So just drag gpedit.msc. The things there ARE NOT shortcuts but registry entries (that act like shortcuts).

So what problem do you have dragging gpedit.msc there and then clicking it.

Just drag it there. There is no shortcut involved unless you drag a shortcut there.

I couldn't find the file earlier.
