Where is XP's Start Menu information

In Win2K, I was able to modify the Start Menu (not All Programs, but the
Start Menu) easily, I set up my own cascaded menus. I can't find a way to
do that on XP. I can see where it will let me "pin" a program to the Start
Menu, but I would sure like to be able to set up my own menus there. Anyone
know if that can be done or where Windows keeps that information?

Just drag the shorcuts around in the nested menus

If you realy need to do the work in Windows Explorer look for "\Documents
and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs" (for programs on everybodies
start menu) and "\Documents and Settings\Randy\Start Menu\Programs" (For
programs on your staart menu - substitute your Windows XP login name for
"Randy"). You may have to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files and
folders. The folders should be on the hard drive partition where Windows XP
is installed.

From Windows Explorer:
C:\Documents and Settings\your-profile-name\Start Menu

Put stuff there

Hi

Right-click the Start button, then select Explore.

Hi Randy,

Right click the Start button/Properties/Start Menu/Customize/Advanced.
Scroll down to My Documents/Display as a Menu (ok, ok).

Then right click the Start button/Explore All Users/Programs. Find the
program in question, right click and copy.

Then go to Windows Explorer and scroll down to: Use as an example:
C:\Documents and Settings\Kelly\My Documents and paste.

Then go to the Start Menu/My Documents. Your program should be listed there
now and cascading.

Several other options:

Find the .exe of the program in question, right click, Pin to Start Menu.
Note: it won't be on the right hand side nor cascading.

Replace My Pictures or My Music (Line 2)

Add a Folder to the Start Button - Right Click (Line 124)

Add Windows Explorer to the Right Click (Line 170)

All Programs is a combined Start (the user stuff above the line) and Programs. You have to use this for tricks that worked on earlier versions.

Start Panel is designed not to be added to as setup programs added above the line to start and favourites and these were designed for the user's use ONLY. So MS removed the ability. Now setip programs can't shove their programs into your face.

The XP Start Menu is the union of two - one for All Users, and a
personal one, for the logged in user. These can be accessed as a folder
structure of shortcuts when you right click the Start button and take
'Open All Users' or just 'Open', respectively. The folder Programs
corresponds to items 'below the line' in the 'All Programs' menu

Thanks to everyone that replied, however, with the exception of Kelly, you
guys all told me how to change the All Programs menu. That's not what I'm
trying to do. I would like to manipulate the Start Menu itself, not All
Programs. It may be that it simply can't be done in XP. Kelly offered some
interesting alternatives that I am investigating. In Win2K it was easy to
set up cascading menus from the Start Menu. That's what I was hoping to
duplicate in XP.

That's because you are retarded. What you call the Start Menu is the All Programs menu. I explained it and you act like it's not true you moron.

W2K Start Menu's user customisation is XP's All Programs menu moron.

Hi Randy,

It can be done. On the left side, it becomes a bit messy and
pre-determined:

Expand Special Folder on the Start Menu
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/294/

Last resort, without the option of cascading is simply dragging a folder of
your choice to the top left.

Keep us posted as to which measure worked best for you and good luck!

Thanks Kelly, I'll give it a shot.

I'm sure the answer is posted somewhere here, but how do I create a *direct*
shortcut in the Pinned area of the Start Menu? Not linking to another
shortcut. I think I'd have to navigate to the respective files on the
computer and r.click and drag them into that area. I'm trying to fill
pinned area with stuff like regedit, msconfig, calc, gpedit, etc. And how
about if I need to call on a module (not an exe)?

The pinned area is registry entries.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StartPage

Favourites is pinned.

That does not help.

Replace the obvious with "hotmail"

Favourites is pinned.

Is this the DLIP that answers questions here? I thought you meant to roll out to multiple machines. Right click an exe and choose Pin To Start or drag them there.

How on earth did you become a Microsoft MVP?

Why did a rude arrogrant wanker like you come here. I'm not a MVP.

I'm relieved to learn that you are not an MVP. I came here to ask a
question and get information. I don't believe that I was either rude or
"arrogrant". It's ironic that you call me rude.

I may answer questions here, but I'm basically here to learn something I
don't know. I'm not a computer mechanic (rolling out to multiple machines
ugh) - just an enthusiast. I need an answer for the latter half of the
post - How about if I want to put devmgmt.msc or gpedit.msc pinned without
linking to an existing shortcut?

Does anyone else have any ideas?
