Running XP SP2. Have a Compaq computer with the "Recovery Discs", not a real
XP disc. Borrowed someone's XP Pro SP2 to try and repair the XP installation
on my C drive.
First problem that came up during boot was: Windows could not start because
the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Found info to fix that, but the command would not let me expand hal.dl_ to
system32 folder. I had to expand it to the root and then copy/paste to
system32 folder, then delete hal.dll off the root.
Windows XP did partially start up after reinstalling the hal.dll file.
Logged into welcome screen using my password. Then a box came up after
logging in:
Explorer.EXE Unable To Locate Component
The application has failed to start because Normaliz.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Tried looking for this file in the XP Pro CD, but could not find it.
And where would this file go if I find it? Someone said system32 folder,
which seems possible.
Here is my scenario: The C drive will not boot up completely into Windows
XP. I have about 16 hours of work that is on C that I had not backed up onto
D. D drive has a Windows Backup with everything on C (except for the 16
hours of work on C that was not backed up when the problem surfaced). Some
of this work cannot be done over. So I am stuck with trying to fix XP so it
will boot up completely.
And with Compaq having those obcene "Recovery Discs", instead of a standard
OS disc, I am stuck. The Compac disc will not reinstall Windows XP and leave
the other files intact. Without even a prompt asking me if I wanted to
re-format the drive, it tried to format my hard drive when I followed the
directions for the "standard System Recovery". I pulled the power cord out
of the computer immediately. Compaq's response" We apologize if it did not
prompt you, but we are not responsible." What a joke. Will never buy a
Compaq or HP product again.
Anyway, I need help with this problem.
