Hi,

How do I get a DOS prompt in XP?

You don't. XP is based on NT not DOS. Best you can do is command prompt or
run DOS from a floppy.

A search in the Windows XP Professional Help and Support
Center for the word "winipcfg" returns the topic titled
"ipconfig". According to this Help topic:

"The ipconfig command is the command-line equivalent to the
winipcfg command, which is available in Windows Millennium
Edition, Windows 98, and Windows 95. Although Windows
XP does not include a graphical equivalent to the winipcfg
command, you can use Network Connections to view and
renew an IP address. To do this, open Network Connections,
right-click a network connection, click Status, and then click
the Support tab."

There is literally no DOS prompt available. However you can get a
command prompt window by going to Start | Run, and typing CMD.
This emulates DOS and looks like DOS. For many purposes, it will
work just like DOS, and will usually do what you want.

It's easy! :) just click Start > Run... then type "CMD". You can type HELP at the Command Prompt to get a full list of ALL of the commands. Type EXIT to exit the program.
