When I download where should I save it? I download games, updates new programs, etc.

In program files? or on the desktop? or in my documents? Confused.
Should I create a folder called dowloads and if so where?
Windows XP

Thanks
Lisa

It really depends on whatever works for you from an organizational
standpoint. I wouldn't put them on the desktop. How about create a
Downloads folder in My Documents and store them there.

Hi Lisa,

Wherever you like. Create a folder, download to it. I like to download most
things to my desktop, then once used create an appropriately named folder
for it and move it to a storage drive. Larger downloads go direct to storage
drives.

Lisa, you can save the downloads anywhere you want just as long as you
remember where you put them. For convenience I have a folder called
Downloads on the C: drive. Go to Windows Explorer, highlight your C drive
the click File, New and Folder, type Download and hit enter. When your
saving a game to the download folder, create another folder under download
with the name of the game.
It's all in what you feel comfortable with managing, make it easy on
yourself.

I like to have a partition other than C: to save downloads
and My Documents so they are safe in case of a system crash
requiring a format/re-install.

I have a Download folder and I create sub-folders to save
time later. I have a sub-folder for Microsoft (and it has
sub-subs), McAfee, Adobe, Fresh Devices, AnalogX,
SourceForge, etc.

| Where ever you can remember to find them.

But, if you create the "download" folder within "My Documents", the folder
will not be eliminated during a system restore, as My Documents is not
touched. Anywhere else on drive/partition C: is a crap shoot!

That is true for system restore but not a format and clean
install on C:

A partition that you have moved My Documents to is better,
in my opinion. A second hard would be even better, but I
gave other expenses right now.

When I save attachments in Outlook Express it always defaults to My
Documents which is a pain if I want to save to another file. It means I
have to browse the file I want each time I save attachments. Does anyone
know if I can alter the default setting of the "save attachments" option? I
have looked high and low but haven't found whether it's possible.

Steve.

They are saved there, by default, because then they are safe if you do a
system restore. The My Documents folder is NOT reverted during a restore.
Any other folder "may" be. Then files will be lost!

Creating your own Directory for downloads makes the most sense. Save them wherever you want them to be, wherever you will know to look for them.
