Where did the sound go?

For some reason the sound has disappeared from my computer. I've tried numerous fixes but I'm really not all that smart about these things. All the control panel type fixes I've tried have failed. Is there something that I should be trying that is a common cause for this? I've had this computer for about 8 months with no problem. Nothing occurred that I know of that would have caused any damage. Thanks, Granpa
