I have installed a new hard drive and I have a backup on CD. All software was installed form original CD. I want to replace the default Favorites file with the backup file. Can you tell me where to find the IE favorites file or registry entry?

Hi,

The location of Favorites folder depends on the version of Windows.

In Windows 9x and ME, this folder was a subfolder of the Windows folder. In
Windows XP, it is a subfolder of the folder \Documents and
Settings\username\, where "username" is replaced by the actual user name.

Hope this helps :-)

Favorites is not a file. It is a folder.
The individual favorites are held in the Favorites folder.
The location can vary, e.g. in Win9x it is usually
C:\Windows\Favorites but in Windows XP if installed on C:
C:\Documents and Settings\logon_name\Favorites

Copy the contents of the old Favorites folder to the new as you
appeared not to have exported them with IE-File-Export.

Right-click a favorite, select Properties and the General tab will
show you the current location or you can check in the Registry.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell

In microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6.browser, "John"

I don't find anything except default items in the Favorites folder under Documents and Settings. I looked under All Users and under John. None of my personal Favorites are listed. Could they be somewhere else? The Backup has been very complete up til now.
