When utilizing "Switch User" the music "NEVER" Stops!

U

UncleDoug

I have multiple users so "Switch User" is regularly
initiated instead of just LogOff.
What I discovered recently was that when someone
logsoff, the music continues. When Original Switch User is
initiated, the music stays thru the logoff, blank screen
and users logon screens with their icons and into the next
logon, and continues even when that logon uses "LogOff".

When Switch User is initiated shouldn't all running
programs continue but drop to background, to allow the
next user to have full control of their internet
experience?

I noticed this first when someone was viewing music
videos with Yahoo Launch, but I just logged onto
wsmonline.com which uses windows media player and tried
Switching User. The music continued thru the entire
process of changing logon screens.

Not sure IF Yahoo Launch uses windows media player but
the above problem results in system stalls. It took 3-4
minutes for the 2nd logon screen to clear (black screen0
but after 30 minutes it never returned to the screen with
all the user icons. And the music continued to play.
I think this might be memory related. Even though XP
is "supposed" to release ram, I have found the same
problem of stalls in the past. The way I fixed it then
was to install a program called FreeRam XPpro in Documents
and Settings - All Users - Application Data, then activate
it for each user. Currently it is not installed, one of
the updates 3-5 months ago seemed to fix the problem then.

I have all updates software and hardware. My system is
Windows XP-Home, AMD 2.0, 512 DDR33 ram, Nvidea 4600,
Audigy Platinum. The only items I have running in the
bottom tray are Zone Alarm Pro (Privacy for cookies and
popups are turned Off), Norton System Works 2003 (Anti
Virus scanner), SpywareGuard, and Google Deskbar. I also
have SpyBot Immunization activated, along with
SpywareBlaster, StartUp Monitor, all other programs need
to be clicked on to run, like Adaware (free version)
Weather Watcher, MSN - AIM - Yahoo messengers, etc etc,

I have a hunch IF the continues music can be
controlled using Switch User, my stalls might disappear.

Thank You,
Doug Manne

Thought I had a problem with another program, so I
uninstalled SpyBot, and AIM, and then cleared the prefetch
folder, cleaned all caches using sfc /scannow /purgecache,
Zone Alarm Pro (clear cache), and Norton SystemWorks
Pro, Then I ran RegScrubXP and RegCleaner. I then
installed my OEM disc and ran Sfc /Scannow, I then ran
ipconfig /release *Con* and ipconfig /flush dns. The other
program was now working?
Back to "The Music "NEVER" Stops.
After reading your note, I tried it again, had the music
stream from wsmonline.com playing on my side, did
logoff/switch user. The music "continued" thru every
screen, into the logging onto another users main screen.
"BUT" when I went to logoff that screen and go back
to my logon screen, there was NO stalls or delays it took
about 3-4 seconds for the secondary logon screen to logoff
and go to the user icon logon screen, I then went to my
main logon screen, with NO stall. But again the music
NEVER stopped thru any of the screens ??

Thought about running InPlace Upgrade, but since the
SP2 release is just around the corner (weeks/months) I
will wait.

Speaking of SP2 the last I read it identifies if you
have a firewall but at that time it could not detect Zone
Alarm or most virus scanners like Norton.
It also had a popup stopper, hope it is easier (key
press to allow) and allows more selectivity. I have turned
OFF Privacy in Zone Alarm Pro. I listen to broadcast
streams and each provider is different, but most require
the popup for the player and sometimes it needs a cookie,
I would like to allow the player, but when I close the
player to eleminate the 2-3 popups I get after the player
is closed.
One of the providers StreamAudio.com has several
stations that I've found these popups.

I would like to run a diagnostic or tracking
software, but almost all stop when you leave a logon, as
in Switch User.

I am going to visit your site next, as I have
another annoying problem that you probably already have a
fix for.
Thanks for looking into this

Hi,

This may help:

Type 4 - program is closed when another user logs on. This is for programs
that do something intrusive, but do not need to be closed on return to the
Welcome screen.

A typical example is a program that plays music. The program will continue
to run when the user disconnects, but will be closed when another user logs
on. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=294855

Just did some more trial and error eliminations, which is
possibly leading me back to XP-Home and my sound card
Audigy Platinum (used the auto detect and have all the
latest drivers).

This time to insure that it was not Media Player I chose
to play a movie trailer using the lastes QuickTime Player.
Again the music NEVER stopped when switching users to
logging onto the 2nd logon and then logging off and back
again.

Next I put a music CD in my DVD drive and then my CD
drive (both with the same results). The music continued
with swithch user to the user(s) logon screnn, but then
when another user was selected the music stopped! When
going back to the original user the music was still
stopped. At no time did the cd eject.

I am not sure IF the music was supposed to continue
at the user(s)logon screen, but think the hardware
stopping with switch user logon was correct.

Thanks Again, ( UncleDoug )

Did you read the information via the MS-KB article?

I looked at the file several times.

I don't remember in the past music continuing once you
left the original logon with switch user and went to the
main welcome screen with the user logons. But in this
instance the music continues even after another user
logson.

I thought there might be a fix with ACT20.exe and
FUSBadApplicationTypeX (but could not find it?) I ran the
analyzer and found only 3 programs that were compatible
Corel Central, Registration System, and Microsoft VM.
There were no programs that were compatible with issues
nor were there any incompatible programs, but the
remaining programs 133 (including several Microsoft
programs) were unknown?

It looks like this tool tells you if a program itself
is compatible, compatible with issues, or incompatible. It
does not tell you if a program is running with issues?

Also ran a the "Collector" tool but all it did was
create a file cabinet, that I was not sure how to use or
view.
Thanks again, I know this will take time!

Kelly, I think I have narrowed my audio problem down to
streaming content!
All the other tests were with streams either Music
Videos with Yahoo Launch, wsmonline.com radio stream, and
a Quick Time movie trailer.

This time I copied a song from a CD to my HD and played
it with Media Player9 it played until I went to logon to
another user then the player "stopped" playing. As it
should according to my last post quoting from KB294855.

Narrowed the audio problem now to streaming media
content online. Now to find out why and how to fix it>

Kelly,
I have narrowed down the problem to IE and streaming
content.

I have had a strange problem in the past. At the top
of ZA pro it has a window that shows up to 5 programs that
are running and access the internet.
Several times I have seen programs there but Not seen
by the Task Manager, the one that occurred most often was
IE, but also some others.
The reason I noticed IE was because In Norton
SystemWorks Pro the Web CleanUp will not run if IE is
loaded. I had closed it 5 minutes earlier that time and it
was not seen by the Task Manager had to reboot and today
the Google Deskbar had "2" icons up there earlier.

I ran a test first with IE loaded and utilizing
Switch User, changing logons and checking the top of Zone
Alarm there was no IE icon, the switching back the icon
was there and the page was loaded.

Next I ran several tests 4 different streaming
providers that use Media Player and Quick Time.
All results were the same, with wsmonline.com
(eonstreams) on my side I had 2 IE icons one flashing (the
stream), wlsam.com (limelight networks), www.kcmofm.com
(adsertion), and www.kloufm.com (streamaudio) because of
the limitation of only 5 there may have been more modules
running that I could not see, I know with streamaudio
there was a ccpm_exe module.
With Quick Time There was a Solid Q and a flashing e
for IE (as with all the other connections.)

When I initialized Switch User, the audio stream
continued with each different logon, and checking at the
top of Zone Alarm each had a flashing e for IE and no
other programs running.

Oh, this time when I closed IE or QuicTime the program
icon was gone from the top of ZA Pro 4-10 seconds after I
closed the program.
Again Thank YOU,
for Your time and help!

Some very interesting and collective information! You are great

Now if there was a diagnostic tool that would continue
to run thru "Switch User". As I wrote earlier most
diagnostic tools stop when you logoff.
Keep me in mind the next time you have a group
discussion with your other MVP. Possibly someone might
have a suggestion. (other than reinstalling XP) ;>)

Thanks again,

Tried Netscape and FireFox. Also again tried Media Payer9,
Quick Time, WinAmp and JetAudio.

Had problems in FireFox with popups (would not load and
popup icon was not to be seen?), so I stayed with links to
one site wlsam.com because it had 3 different formats:
Windows Media, Real Audio, and MP3.

I opened directly thru the players and also thru the URLs
in the browsers.
With the exception of JetAudio, all other players
continued playing the streamed audio thru the Switch User
log off and login to the second user account.

JetAudio played all three formats and as soon as I logged
off and before the user login screen appeared the audio
stopped. When I went back to my login screen, the audio
was still stopped: and right now I think that is normal
even with switch user but I'm not sure.

Playing thru the browsers MP3 files used WINAMP and for
Real Player files I use "Real Alternative" which uses
Media Player Classic.

To this point I would eliminate the browsers, and probably
the players also, but to have one player work and not the
others (JetAudio was installed last week and WINAMP was
installed Sunday afternoon) all other players have been on
my system for over a year.

Looks more like XP, but Switch User help files are very
sparce. And to have one player work, also has me
scratching my head?

Thanks again for any new suggestions,
( UncleDoug )
