when typing in word my pointer keeps jumping around the document

I have a touch pad on my laptop when I try to type a paper in word my curser
hops around the page and causes me to type in the middle of a different word
is there anything I can do to stop this? Has anyone ever had the same problem?

Stay away from the touchpad and/or reduce its sensitivity.
