cursor jumps when entering text

In Word 2003, on my Sony Vaio laptop everytime I'm typing sentences the
cursor jumps up randomly into the middle of a prior typed statement on the
page. There isn't a problem with the touch pad or USB connect mouse (they're
connected at the same time but it hasn't been an issue before.) This just
started a couple of days ago. Any ideas?

The usual causes of this problem are an over-sensitive touch pad (most
common - keep the heels of your hands away from it) and an unwelcome
intrusion of voice recognition software (turn off the microphone)
