Screen then it goes completely black. I can barely see in the
background what is coming up but it is there. If I close the lid and
bang on it it comes up no problems. I know that is not good but did it
out of frustration one day and it worked. Any ideas?

Broken cable for the backlight?

Thanks Conor. So I assume that is internally and I would need to take
it somewhere to get it repaired?

Sounds like the connection to the backlight is loose or the backlight
is going out. If it is under warranty, get Dell to fix it, otherwise,
take it apart and check the conenctions yourself. You may need to
replace the wiring harness or the backlight.

Good luck.

If it is still under a warranty then send it back for rapairs. If the
warranty has expired then ring DELL to ask how much would they charge
for the repairs and replacement of parts.

In my experience, laptops are the most difficult for a handy man/woman
to deal with. The parts are completely unreachable. Also, there aren't
many shops selling generic parts for laptops; therefore, expensive
exercise to get branded products!

Yes. Usually the cable breaks internally in the hinge area after a fair
bit of opening and closing.
