Whne I open a new word document there is an old document there. This happens
every time I try to open a blank document. How do I reset my blank doc to be
blank?

I've been told that you NEVER delete that file. Rename it, yes, but never
delete it.

Have you tried closing word and deleting your normal.dot
It will be recreated when you reopen word.

You've been told wrong! Please remove the MVP from your signature; you are
obviously NOT an MVP.

Anyway, go rename it. Start Word and a new normal.dot will be created for
you. Once you're happy with the results you can delete the renamed
document.
With the possible exception of word 2007 which I haven't seen yet,
deleting normal.dot is a recommended way to correct that sort of problem
since day one. I would suggest you go to MS and research the issue more;
since you're an MVP that should be easy to do. That way you'll know more
what templates are about and what is contained in them, which CAN, but
probably isn't in your case, be quite important to the user.

And if the word of other MVPs isn't good enough for you, how about a quote
from Microsoft?

NOTE: Renaming the Normal.dot file resets several options back to their
default settings, including custom styles, custom toolbars, macros, and
AutoText entries. For this reason, Microsoft strongly recommends that you do
not delete your Normal.dot file.

That's why JoAnn is an MVP (albeit for her work with Publisher) and you are
not. Such reckless advice can result in the loss of months of carefully
configured working conditions. You should *always* rename normal.dot so that
the bulk of such work is not lost for the sake of a little common sense.
Once you are certain that the contents of the
old normal.dot are never ever required again, then by all means delete the
old file, but *never* in the first instance.
