why does a document come up when i hit new (blank) document

For some reason, every time I try to open a new (blank) document, the same
nonblank(i.e. has text) document opens. I have tried to uninstall and
reinstall office, but it doesn't fix the problem the same file keeps opening
up instead of the blank word document that i want. What can I do to fix the
problem?
