when going to standby system just hangs

System was working fine but now just displays"Preparing to standby" and goes
no further. Only change to system was to connect a USB scanner and came up
with an error message saying there was a problem and may not work properly
but everything did work ok.
XPPro AMD64 3200, 1 gb

I've seen that before, after updating to SP2, I just set the computer not
to go into standby.

Mich...
