~ - What's with the tilda?

S

Sean

Every once and a while, a file of about 240K appears on a
desktop. I can't say that a partiular action or time
causes it to appear. I delete it and then remove it from
the trash bin. The only 'change I have noticed is my
Grand Theft Auto 3 has been running a little slower but I
don't really think that is related to this ~ (tilda) file
appearance as it started appearing before I started
replaying GTA3.

Any insight would be appreciated.

My nephew reciently installed GTA-Vice City on one of our
computers. We experienced similar abnormalities. We also
had some demanding applications slow down and in a few
vasses lock up. I removed the program and all vestages
from the computer and everything returned to normal. He
visited again a week later and I let him reinstall GTA-3
with the same results. That game has now been removed and
the computer is once again normal. I believe that there
is an issue with that game.

Hi Sean,

This is a "known issue" related to the Outlook Express Address Book. Any
time you make changes in -- or add an entry to -- the Address Book, the
tilde file appears on the desktop.

For now, the only fix is to delete this file and not worry about it. It has
no effect on the computer's operation.

Not anymore, I have Seen the Light...and it's called [Identity].wa~ !

Look at the Last Modified date of this file and you will see it's very
nearly the same date you installed Q330994 (or Q331923, for the truly hip OE
user).

Delete it if you want but you will no longer have the automatic backup of
Address Book which OE creates by default.

Sounds like tilda but actually spelled tilde. No offence, just thought you'd
like to know.

And since it shows up in various places (c: root, desktop, my documents,
etc. ) I guess it should be called the waltzing my tilde? 8>. (ducks and
runs).
