Any old version will work with XP. Don't install it just
copy it to your hard drive. when you click on "WINWORD.EXE"
you'll get a warning that a file is not regestered and to
insert your cd, just click it away and word will start. It
will work fine , print and all.

MS WORKS SUITE includes a full version of MS WORD and can be
found for less than $100.
MS OFFICE for Students and Teachers can be found for
$125-150.
These are USA prices, since you are doing "course work" you
may be able to get a special price through your school.

MS WORKS version 7 (XP?) is just WORKS. WORKS SUITE does
include the current version of WORD, which is the same as
that bought alone [except that it does not qualify as a
product upgrade path to OFFICE]. The question is whether
you have just WORKS or WORKS SUITE.
Your OFFICE 97 is a qualifying path for future OFFICE
upgrade versions.
You can have WORKS and OFFICE installed at same time. I
presume you can uninstall WORKS and leave WORD.

features in the programs might not work. If a friend sends
you a spreadsheet or word document from OFFICE XP that has
some feature unsupported in 97 it won't work and may not be
shown. You can get plug-ins from Office Update that will
allow some if not all later features to be viewed.

Checkout Openoffice.org. Its free and can read and save files as .doc. I
like it but then I dont do anything fancy.

You are mentioning "coursework", which implies you are connected with an
academic institution. Accordingly, you may be eligible for an academic
license. Get info from your school or Microsoft's web site.
Or, you can avoide Word totally and use the free Office suite OpenOffice
available at www.openoffice.org. It's a terrific Word processor.
