What's the best defragger

R

Since I got my new Dell PC (I also had XP home on prior Dell PC)
fragmentation occurs quickly, maybe because this disk is NTFS. The major
files that fragment are the daily System Restore files that frag into
exactly 288 fragments each.

In just a few days it gets up to 6-10% as measured by Norton System Doctor.

1-What is the best defragger regardless of the cause of this problem. I use
Windows Defragger, but also tried Norton Speed Disk. Which program is the
best?

2-Any ideas what is the cause of the rapid fragmentation?

Using an NTFS parition will LIMIT the amount of
fragmentation you get. Fragmentation occur when moving
large pieces of data around your drive. Diskeeper is the
best software you can use (in my opinion). Windows XP
defrag tools is a slimed down version of Diskeeper.

Hi Rich - I highly recommend PerfectDisk - it takes a little longer the
first couple of times (doing an offline and then a full online), but it is
just as fast thereafter, and it does a far better job of optimizining
positioning in my opinion than any of the others (and I've used most of them
at one time or another). You'll find that everyone has a (usually highly
partisan) opinion as to which is the best.

IMO
With Windows XP and a NTFS drive, use the Windows XP defragmet application.
The marginal difference {in speed} of third party programs is not worth the
cost.
