what's synchronizing folders?

The small brown squarish Outlook logo in bottom-right on task bar sometimes
changes to another one and the text is something like "Outlook is
synchronizing folders"

I wondered what that means, what its doing, how often it does this, what
triggers it to do this, etc.

Sometimes its when its doing something with an IMAP or Hotmail server.
