my computer has an intel (R) celeron (R) CPU 2.60GHz. (looks confusing but
thats what it says)
anyway i was wondering if intel pentium 4 was better, or is the one i have
now still good.

Browny

Does your Celeron processor work for you?.. does it ever hold you back?..

Celeron is slower than a Pentium 4 because it has no cache RAM. Thus, it
is less expensive. As long as the PC does what YOU want it to do, that is all
that matters. Are you satisfied?

Does your Celeron processor work for you?.. means "is it working ok?"..

Does it ever hold you back?.. means "does it ever stop you from carrying out
a task on your computer?"..

The answer you wanted is "yes, a full blown P4 is better than the
equivalent Celeron". You get what you pay for in this instance.
Ignore the MS bobbleheads. They don't know how to answer questions
without guidance from Bill on high.

A P4 chip is a better more advanced chip which will accomplish more advanced
tasks quicker than a Celoron chip. The point the others are making is that
for ordinary purposes such E-mail and most internet usage, the Celoron be
fine for most users. EVERYONES computer slows over time to the point that a
complete re-install of the OS becomes necessary.

Browny, a Pentium 4 2.6G is better than the Celeron though at 2.6G it
aint no slouch either. If you are a Heavy Gamer or
into Video Editing you will notice a difference. Otherwise it's fine.
If it seem slow at times that could be a lack of Ram.
though your system should have 512MB. If only 256MB then another 256
would make a difference.

I am doing everything I want with a 2,6 celeron with 1 gig ram and I am a
poweruser (I dont play games though)
I used to have 512 mb ram and it worked ok, but I wanted to run too many
things at the same time so I upgraded.

With proper maintenance and careful monitoring, a computer does not have to
become slow and re-installation of the OS is very rarely "necessary". Most
chose to do it to compensate for their laziness and lack of house cleaning
and proper maintenance. I maintain a network of over 200 computers, and I
have never had to re-install the OS in a single one of them because they had
become "slow".
The Celeron (notice the correct spelling) is a budget chip, and is generally
included on budget computers that lack sufficient memory and hard drive
space, so they are more easily affected by bloat, and require closer
attention than a system with a more powerful processor, more RAM, and larger
hard drives.
The Celeron is the 4 cylinder 3 speed of the computer world, But as long as
there are consumers out there looking for the $300 computer bundle, there
will be Celerons. The old adage of "You get what you pay for" is
particularly applicable here.
