what would cause DNS setting to change

B

BigJim

I have a laptop running xp home sp2 with a connection thru router and cable
modem.
Today I could not connect to the Internet and after checking around I found
my
DNS setting was change to a static address, under TCP/IP, nothing else. I had
it set to auto prior to this problem.
I reset it to auto and connection to the Internet was fixed. I ran a virus
scan and nothing
was detected.

So the big question is, how did this happen? I do connect using VPN to a
secure network at work, using Remote Desktop.
It's got me scratching my head. I was even thinking that it may have pulled
down a setting from my at work machine.

TIA

Without knowing what the DNS was set to (the static entries) - everyone
would just be guessing along side you. ;-)

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
