Is there less expensive software then Partition Magic 8.
I only plan to use it once.

I'm not sure but doesn't XP give you the option to create partitions when
you do the format.

All partitioning software is basicly the same price. you can check out
Acronis PartitionExpert 2003 for $50

Hi Chris,
All partitioning software is basicly the same price.

No, not really, see (in US dollars):

Partitioning programs:

BootIT NG www.terabyteunlimited.com $34.95
Partition Magic www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic $69.95
Partition Commander http://www.v-com.com/product/pc_ind.html $49.95
Ranish Partition Manager http://www.ranish.com/part/ free

If it's not the drive your running XP on use XP's Disk Management to do it.

Hi,

PM's literature gives 160GB as the upper limit. BootIT NG gives an upper
limit of 2TB (that's terabyte). BootIT NG or BING (as it's commonly called)
is an excellent program, but the user interface is not all warm and fuzzy
like PM. You need some basic knowledge of the hard drive structure to use it
effectively, but it's not too hard to learn.

The important point with BING (which has a 30 day fully functional trial
period to evaluate it) is that if you do not want its Boot Manager
facilities, do *not* install it. Boot the floppy (or CD) and cancel
install. That will enter maintenance, click on Partition work and you
can see the layout - click any partition or free space and there are
buttons to do possible actions. Including Copy followed by selecting
free space, possibly on a different drive, and Paste. Note that if you
want to move (Slide) and resize a partition you have to do it in two
steps - not, as in PM, as one.

Surely the drive mfg. has a utility to partition the drive. Go to their
web site and download the latest version. Usually the junk software that
comes with the drive is outdated. Failing that take that sucker back.

If you want non-destructive partitioning software, use the trial version
of PM 8. I believe the Ranesh partitioner is also non-destructive.
While that software has been around for a long time, I've never used it
and so can't comment on whether it works well. If you don't care about
any data on the disk, just use XP's partitioner. Boot with the CD and
create and format the partitions you want.
