what simple thing am i missing.?

problem:-if i click on google to open a search the notification box in the
notification area is flashing orange and the microsoft internet explorer bar
at the top of the page is pale blue .until i click anywhere on the page i
cant type a search item .its as though until i click on the page it is not
activated.what am i missing please?

Make sure that you don't have any malware.Scan your system with latest
versions of Spybot,search and destroy,CWShredder as well as with
adaware.Run them in Safe mode.

Then I would suspect that you have a plugin that is causing this. See:

sirs,can i thank you both for your help.it wasnt a plug in as i
disabled/enabled them one by one. in safe mode i did all scans plus disk
cleanup/defragment.i also deleted google. i then reinstalled the desktop
shortcut to google and it now works perfectly.
