I just set up a wireless connection in my house, and I wonder if there is a
program that can tell me if I have someone using my wireless system. I use
Win XP Home, with all updates and I use Zone Alarm. I think I set up my
Linksys WRT54GS device the right way, but that stuff is basically Greek to
me. Any help is appreciated

not sure on that specifc model, but if you login to your router
normally 192.168.1.1 with user/pass admin/admin by default unless you
changed it, and tick wireless normally there, there is a option to view
IP address' on the network.. simple math will tell you if there is too
many.. If it is not in there, there is probably a option in the main
menu for network, and clients or something. you really should enable
some security options.. even MAC filtering is a good start..

P.S a piece of software that might work is Look@LAN, found here
http://www.majorgeeks.com/LookLAN_d3365.html

I think it just scans all of the IP's in the last octet, which would be
fairly efficient.

OK, I just logged into a similar Linksys, on the main page there might
be a link status? if so click that, then local network, then hit the
button DHCP Client Table

Hello , I use to wonder same . There are several tasks to consider and
complete with Linksys . To make it easy on yourself ... call Linksys . They
will briefly have you set to go . Enabling the "Firewall" is a must and
excellent way to secure your connection . There is a newsgroup catagory if
you want to post wireless questions later on . I will return to this post
frequently ,, in this catagory , for I know there are many settings to view
with the wireless connection . And if you want to set up for upmost security
.... phone call Linksys . A password {personal password} or {Linksys' default
password "admin"} will open your ''Setup" page . The setup page shows all
settings and give options to your router . You may make changes at will at
anytime there . I change my "network name" once in awhile ,, which is to say
I leave all other settings same . ** If you connect a wireless printer share
the WEP key from the router setup page in tab Wireless / Wireless Security /
KEY 1 . You will need to select WEP Security Mode / tic 1 / 64 bits 10 hex
digits / type in any word in "Passphrase" box / CLick the button "Generate" /
use code in the "Key 1" box .**

The WRT54g will do WPA-PSK, don't use WEP, it's obsolete and open.

Do you need to have a wireless connection. Simpler in some situations to
opt for a wired connection.

Hope this helps.

I have a year-old Belkin 54g router that supports WPA which is my preferred
security method. The Linksys, Belkin, and Netgear wireless adaptors on the
the three PCs that connect wirelessly to my home network all support it.
However, the Belkin ethernet bridge/game adaptor that is used to connect the
X-Box to X_Box Live only supports WEP. Go figure. The bridge was purchased
one year ago and I had it replaced last week under warranty. I was hoping
that the new ones would support WPA but they don't. It's a bit annoying
that a new device does not support the higher encryption that the router
supports from the same company.

Hello , Thank You Leythos ,,, I am now WPA connected . Connecting the
wireless printer was as usual very tricky but successful . Thanks again ,
your reply helped me alot .

Hello , To see if there are other wireless activity : Right click the
wireless icon / click "View Available Wireless Networks" . You will see 1 or
more . I show just 1 and that means noone is attempting to use that
connection . And yes,, Leythos is correct " WPA Network Authenication is much
better than WEP Network Authenication . Is "View Available Wireless Networks
" , you will see what Network Authenication you have selected . May read WEP
, WPA , or Open / unsecured connection .
