A folder which I encrypted (a pf file) now askes for me to choose a
program to open it instead of simply asking for a password. Any ideas
chaps?

Cheers,

well......?....

a dialog must have popped up for you to
have the option to encrypt, so do it again
and see if the decrypt option pops up instead....

you can also look up that extension in
your file types via folder options or
search your registry for that ext and see
what software is associated....

I'm not exactly sure what's happening. In Windows Explorer, you click on a
folder that you have encrypted, and you get the "open with" message? Or is
it when you try to open the file inside the encrypted folder? What is the
extension of the file?

It's when I click on the encrypted folder that I get the "open with"
message. The extension for the file is '.pf' . There is not an option
to decrpt it in the file menu either. Any idea? If I could just some
how set the files to opened by the default program...!

What program was used to encrypt it? That's the one needed to decrypt
it.

It was most likely made by Microsoft's Private Folder, which apparently
Microsoft pulled less than a month after it's release because of
concerns about potential data loss when using the program. You need the
program and the password to open the file. Someone here
http://www.microsoftprivatefolder.com/ says that the program is still
available but I haven't checked the download link.

It's not a very good idea to encrypt files with this program unless you
have an unencrypted back up of the file stashed away somewhere,
otherwise you run a great risk of loosing the files!

Ahhh, that is indeed the program! I seem to have somehow lost it off my
harddrive whilst transferring data from another pc so i'll need to
download it again. Thanks for the help guys!
