What order to upgrade ATI graphics card??

Hi all,

I am upgrading an older ATI Radeon9000 to a 9600(?) and was wondering what
was the best order of operations to perform this task. Since they both use
the same Catalyst drivers, is it necessary to re-install them? I was
thinking that while I had the older 9000, I would select Standard VGA in
WinXP, then shut down. Open up the case and swap the cards, then turn on
WinXP again - it should detect the new card and re-install the Catalyst
drivers. Then I would update to the newest Catalyst drivers - how's that?
Lastly upgrade DirectX9a to 9c.

Any suggestions would help,
Thanks,
Wm

p.s. a friend gave me a sample RV351 card, what exactly Radeon version would
this be? I am assuming the performance level to be around a 9600 - is that
true?

I wouldn't do that. I did the same thing, and I found that
I got best results by first removing the Catalyst driver
.... installing the 9600, and then installing the driver. I
think Cat 4.8 is very good for the 9600. I used the
Catalyst uninstaller from ATI to clean the drivers off
the computer totally. Works fine, and is quick and
easy.
