What nifty features are on your company's intranet?

One of my supervisors asked for a report of ideas of what I would do with our
company intranet if it were all up to me. I work at a financial institution.

I have a few ideas, but I'm sure others can dream up with neat
features/applications/functionality I wouldn't come up with. What nifty
things have you developed for your company? Or, if you don't work on this
sort of thing, what have you seen at your company that you think is pretty
neat? What do you wish you had on your company's intranet that might make
your job better?

It doesn't have to be something developed with FrontPage!

I could use some ideas!

Interesting question. What are you offering for these ideas to boost your
bonus/save you from getting fired?

Even though I spent nearly 10 years as a NYSE registered securities broker,
your comment:
"I work at a financial institution." is quite broad.

Without knowing what you actually do, or what your "Supervisor" is looking
for, my first question would be:
"How much are you willing to spend."

You have to examine the current environment and then determine "What is or
where is there a need."

Necessity is the mother of invention.

I wrote a perl script to generate web pages that reflected the contents of a
diretory tree. This allowed people to place files in the directory tree and
have them appear on the web as downloadable objects. We shared all kinds of
data across the entire corporation.

Business software is developed for the ultimate purpose of saving money, or
making money, which are 2 sides of the same coin. both affect bottom-line
profitability. So, what you need to think about is not "what is nifty," but
"what is useful." Computer software is particularly good at automating
common tasks which do not require a lot of complex thought to perform.
Computers are extrememly fast at calculating (hence, the name "computer").
So, what sort of tasks do people commonly perform in your company, which
consume human resources, and which could be automated and deployed on your
Intranet for easy access to the employees? If you can identify some of
these, and suggest a software solution for them, you will save the company
money, and impress your supervisors.

I think a random raise request generator would be useful...like a slot
machine...three lemons and your fired.
