What needs to be done to re-install XP Professional on my computer

Is it as simple as deleting all the programs and using the re-install CD? I
have a Dell E510 computer, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz
Processor Speed 2.92 GHz
Memory (RAM) 1024 MB
Operating System Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Operating System Version 5.1.2600
but it's not running well, so I thought I would try to re-install. I want
to do this correctly, but I've never done this before and I don't want to
mess up my whole computer.
I appreciate any assistance!!

Make sure the computer boots to the re-install CD before deleting any files.

Has it always not been 'running well' ?

What have you installed recently that may have affected it ?

Have you disabled all of the lame startup programs that Dell installs ?

Have you done spyware scans with AdAware and Spybot in safe mode ?

A complete re-install may be pretty drastic measures.

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, and after downloading all of the WinXP-specific device
drivers from the manufacturer's web site and burning them to a CD,
simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)
