What makes the cursor jump all over the place?

I am having the same problem when I am typing the cursor moves to another
place in the paragraph or on the page. It just now did it. I have disabled
the Synaptics touch pad and have updated my Logitech MX Laser driver. I have
a Satellite P205-S6237 with Vista Premium. I recently tried a HP Vista
Laptop and never had this problem. I seem to recall having this problem
several years ago but cannot find any references. I have not found the
disable option on the Satellite, I just uninstalled it. It has happen three
or four times while typing this. I am keeping my hands off of the touchpad
and set the mouse aside so it is not moving.

which mouse is it ??...I was running the Logitech mx1000 and finally got rid
of it and went with something else....Logitech no longer makes this mouse
and I am beginning to think it was they could not make it work with Vista
either

Laptop touchpad's are notoriously touchy, no pun intended. Many people
including me use a Logitech USB cordless mouse.

In the Support link at Logitech.com you can chose your mouse and seek
download for Vista. I had to for mine which I use on XP and Vista.

I have same problem with my cursor and it is so annoying. My cursor will
jump and I will be typing at a different spot. It happens everytime I type
the word you and your rapidly. I am making a point not to touch the
touchpad. I have recently upgraded my Toshiba Satellite from Vista Home
Premium (it did not do it with that program) to Vista Ultimate. Any
suggestions on how to fix it?

Go into the touchpad setup (there is a icon in the lower right) find the
"Tapping" settings and turn off tapping.

I have had this problem and have discovered a "cure" that works for me. It
turns out that by changing the theme and color scheme, I could get rid of the
problem. I have had to experiement but a visita basic scheme theme worked
for me! I know this sounds strange but I suggest you give it a try.

Hey it is Vista, nothing is strange

I've had this same problem with my new laptop. I thought I was crazy!
And being so careful not to brush the touchpad when typing!
I see it is happening to others, but unique to laptops, not any
particular brand (I have a Compaq Presario w/ vista)
Then I heard it was just Vista that caused the cursor jump, but then I
browsed forums and saw people on laptops with XP had the same problem.

I saw recommended reformatting(!) , reinstall the drivers, and now
changing themes, that's a little silly and the other like reformatting
were quite drastic.
So I decided to try the easiest fix and the one that seemed to
LOGICALLY MAKE MOST SENSE
Now, I'm not sure which one it is because I did them both at the same
time and I'm really not sure how to use the "tapping" feature anyway,
but
I turned "tapping" to "off" and I reduced the touchpad sensitivity to
"medium", right in the middle.

Jumping cursor problem ELIMINATED!

On my Home Premium laptop there is no "Touchpad" control
(that I have found in Control Panel) -- just "Mouse",
and in that there's no "Tapping". I no longer see the
Symantec logo appearing in the notification area, and
MSCONFIG doesn't show it. Apparently it's been
vaporized. Any idea as to how it can be restored without
"restoring"?

Thanks!

Whoops... that should be "Synaptics"

Dell Support told me to buy an external mouse. I bought a Microsoft one at
Walmart and it fixed the problem for me. My gripe is that I am still under
warranty and have to buy something to make the Dell work. Clearly it's a
hardware problem, I think???

I also upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, and I have been having
the same cursor problems. But it does not do it all the time. But it does
seem to happen when I am typing that the cursor will start to jump to another
place. But I am also having problems with it opening a page when I put the
cursor over and icon, and I never click the icon. Also my cursor will just
stop responding to my external mouse. My mouse pad will respond, but my
external mouse will not. The only way I can get the external mouse to start
working again is to reboot my laptop. Very Frustrating.

I did see some suggestions listed for the jumping cursor, and here is what
it said:

My cursor is behaving erraticly.

There are two possible solutions to this problem:

If your TouchPad is dirty, use a small amount of ammonia-based window
cleaner on a clean cloth and gently wipe the surface of the TouchPad to
remove any dirt or grime. Having a clean TouchPad surface usually eliminates
erratic pointer movement.

The TouchPad driver may need to be updated. Download the appropriate
Synaptics driver from the manufacturer's support site. Uninstall the driver
that is not working and then install the downloaded driver.

I was also notified by windows that for my mousepad, synaptics did offer an
update that was compatible with windows Vista:

http://www.synaptics.com/support/drive.cfm

But, when I tried to download the upgrade, I got an error messege from
WinRAR self-extracting archive:

The archive is either in unknown format or damaged
Cannot open C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\NOULH7VJ\
Synaptics_Driver_v10_1_8_Vista32[2].exe.

I tried to manually locate this file, but with no luck. Not sure what the
problem is with that.

I loaded the file to my desktop, but being computer illiterate, I am not
sure enough to know where to upload
the synaptic driver upgrade.

Any help would be appreciated.
