What is "thumbs.db" and why is it causing me so much GRIEF?!?!?!?!?!

Hello all,

I have a website on two computers: My desktop and my laptop. Before I make
any changes I always do a publish from the remote site to my computer to
make sure I'm working on the proper files. I'm using FrontPage 2003.

When I publish from remote to local or vice versa I very frequently get this
error, then it stops publishing:

"Server error: file thumbs.db has been modified by xxxxxxxx"

This is driving me insane. In the past when I've gotten this error, I've
either deleted the file or put a "do not publish" tag on it. But this time
it says that the file is in "home_files\thumbs.db". There's two problems
here. 1) I've removed all the thimbs.db files on both the server and local
copies and 2) There is NO FOLDER called home_files!!

Am I doing something wrong? What's generating the "thumbs.db" file? Is this
an avoidable problem and, if so, how can I avoid this? Thanks is advance
from a very frustrated FP user.

.
It is a part of FrontPage 2003's use of thumbnail images.
The file is placed on the viewers computers as a cache. It
is nothing to worry about.

To correct the problem, go to the sites Control Panel and
uninstall and reinstall FrontPage Server Extensions. If no
Control Panel ask you hosting company to do it for you.

You can also delete them all.
And there is a setting in Control Panel to Do Not Cache Thumbs..

If you use Word Art, or any other FrontPage drawing tools, or you use Word,
Excel, Publisher or PowerPoint to create HTML files and bring those into
FrontPage, a folder named pagename_files is created that contains images.
If home.htm (or home.html) falls into any of the above categories the folder
home_files will have been created. This folder is "super hidden" in
FrontPage, meaning you will never see it, unless you look in Windows
Explorer.

Thumbs.db is a Windows system database file that contains thumbnails of any
images in the folder it is in. It is created when you open the folder in
Windows Explorer in thumbnail view.

To prevent its creation (in Windows XP), in Windows Explorer use
Tools->Folder Options
On the View tab, under Files and Folders, tick the box "Do not cache
thumbnails"

Thumbs.db has absolutely nothing to do with FrontPage or FrontPage server
extensions - it's a Windows system file that has no place in any website,
and will often cause problems when publishing.

Thank you Ronx. I stand corrected. Here is an interesting
read regarding thumbs.db
