What is this re DCOM?

T

Terry Pinnell

In Event Viewer I have this message:

'DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is
disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. "
attempting to start the service ImapiService with arguments "-Service"
in order to run the server:
{520CCA63-51A5-11D3-9144-00104BA11C5E}'

Absolutely meaningless to me! Anyone able to tell me what it means
please? FWIW, in Services there is no service named DCOM or anything
like it.

Thanks, I'll try that. It's odd though, as I already seem to have Help
& Support running, and I don't seem to ever have run Security Update
KB840374, which both seem to be criteria for the symptoms. But the
proof of the pudding...etc.

Terry,

For some reason DCOM cannot start the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.

{520CCA63-51A5-11D3-9144-00104BA11C5E} is the CLSID for Microsoft IMAPI Disc
Master or ImapiService, the freindly name is IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.

IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service is imapi.exe.

First, are you trying to use XP's inbuilt CD burner? If yes...

See if the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service is disabled.
Open Services....
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll sown to an d double click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service |
Set startup type to Automatic | Click Apply | Try to start it, Hit the Start
button |
If it starts close Services.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;841996 has nothing
to do with the IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.

You need to have the Event ID & the Event Source, then plug 'em in here...

Thanks Wes.

I have that imapi service disabled, as I don't use the service. I have
Nero/ahead inCD which I use on one of my CD-RW drive. (From time to
time I consider removing it, as I frequently hear diatribes against
UDF in general and inCD in particular, but it *is* convenient to have
a 650MB 'floppy' at hand!) For general burning I use Nero.

So I wonder why DCOM would be trying (frequently, every day) to start
imapi?

Thanks for that handy link to identify Events. Note that it needs an
extra 'x', or gives a 'Not Found'.

Regarding that hotfix Heirloom recommended, from
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;841996
I'm now a little nervous that I shouldn't have installed it. I'm
thinking maybe there was a good reason why I didn't do so in 2004 when
it was published. I'd *uninstall* it, but I'm darned if I can find it
in Add/Remove. No mention of KB840374 as one of the 'Security Update
for Windows XP' entries, or anywhere else as far as I can see. Yet it
apparently did install yesterday... Any thoughts please?

Terry,

I get a DCOM error by the *hundreds*. Trying to start the StiSvc service or
Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) service. Of course I have it disabled. I
just ignore them and clear the event logs.

Event Source: DCOM
Event ID: 10005
DCOM got error "The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled
or because it has no enabled devices associated with it. " attempting to
start the service StiSvc with arguments "" in order to run the server:
