WHAT IS THIS FILE EXTENSION?

My brother has sent me several pictures via Outlook Express and they all show
up fine. As of late he has sent some that have file extensions that are
unrecognizeable...they start with !cid_001@01C69D35 and the like.

I cannot find the file extension !cid_
I have searched MS and filext dot com...various other places...to no avail!
What is this?

The pics show up as icons in his folder, I'm having to associate them with a
program to open with every time, I'm curious as to why they changed.

He says he hasn't done anything different...but an update to his
scanner/printer/fax machine where he loads his pics with a card reader.

Thanks for your time.

FWIW the ID number on the back of a credit card
is called the CID number...could that be related in
some way?
https://www.fleurdelis.com/cid.htm

The name of a file can be anything...the important
thing is the format. What do you see after the dot?
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.JPG?

Here's some info on resetting your file associations:

(307859) HOW TO: Change File Associations
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307859

More info:

Try this...open an image folder and right click one
of your image files...from the menu, select...Open
With / Choose Program.

Make your choice from the list or Browse to the
correct program if it is not in the list.

If you want the default...choose..."Windows
Picture and Fax viewer"

Once you make your selection...be sure to check
the box that says: "Always use the selected program
to open this kind of file". (you will need to do this
for each format....jpg, .tif, .gif...etc.)

Also...you can right click an image and choose
Properties / Change Button...choose the program
you wish to use and click...OK / Apply / OK.

Also...in WinXP, you can go to...My Computer /
Tools / Folder Options / File Types tab...

You did say that !cid_001@01C69D35 was the "file extension"

Did you mean "file name"?

I'm sorry, I should have written it all out, this is what one picture says:
!cid_image001.jpg@01C6A1B1[1]

when I right clicked on the picture as I was forwarding it back to him it
says this:
mhtml:mid://00000000/!cid:000601c6a239$73637010$2f01a8c0@my name

I've tried all that other stuff, associating files...etc. but not the
'Repair Image File Type Association'

I guess this is happening to my dad as well...so must be something was
changed at the source?

thanks

Yes...apparently something was changed
at the source. I've never seen files with
names like this but I would try the following.

You have a file with the following name:
!cid_image001.jpg@01C6A1B1[1]

What happens if you right click the file
and choose...Rename...remove everything
before the ! and after the g...
image001.jpg

Can you view it now?

I believe that what you see is the link to the image, and it certainly does
look wrong.
Parsing the link:
I don't know what !cid means
image001.jpg looks like a file name
@ is part of an ip address
01C6A1B1 looks like an ip address in hex.
So, it is not surprising that your mail reader can't do anything with the
link. And the problem is very unlikely be a broken file association.
My opinion is that the sender of the mail needs to fix the problem

Thank you all!

I did as John suggested, took away everything before and after in the file
name leaving image001.jpg and it worked fine! Now I have associated them to
open with the program of my choice...very cool...thanks again all for your
help!
