What is the point of partitioning a hard drive?

It doesn't matter how you partition your drives, or how many drives you have
connected. You still need multiple "backups" for DATA safety. External USB
drives and DVD's come to mind.

Absolutely. However, my experience has always been that the boot drive
typically fails considerably more often then the second drive in most
cases .... probably because it's accessed more frequently and works
harder. Therefore I would never set up a data drive on the boot drive.
