what is the effectiveness of ntbackup?

Hi:
I run ntbackup to create a normal copy of my c: drive on win xp home sp2. I
wonder if my system crashed -for example a disk failure, or just if I wanted
to change my hard disk:
a) how would I restore in the new disk the bkf file? (assuming there is
nothing in it)
b) In that case, what will be restored? I mean, an exact copy of the
original hard disk, with windows, my apps and documents?
c) If that is not the case, would you recommend me any tool for doing that?

Thanks!

Your post is off-topic for a security newsgroup; try
microsoft.public.windowsxp.basic or ...general . You have to be able to
access the backup file from another medium such as an external drive, a tape
drive, a removable hard drive. In the case of disaster or simple hard disk
failure you have to reinstall windows before running ntbackup to restore
your system. That is why it asks you to create a floppy disk ASR after
running the backup. It is a good idea to have the Windows XP CDs for
reinstalling available. This includes the SP2 cd unless you have
slipstreamed it already or have original Windows XP SP2 install CDs.

might I suggest you look at Acronis True Image for what you have in mind.
It allows you to create a emergency boot CD that does not need an OS to run.
it allows you to "clone" your present HD to another.........bootable
it allows you to image your installation onto CD/DVD and with the Emergency
CD reapply that Image back onto the HD
it allows you to back up directories...folders...files....on a schedule

Does your "normal copy" include creating a floppy disk?

You boot the installation CD, and eventually you will get to a place where
you either proceed to install or whatever or to restore from a backup file.
This effort will fail if you did not create a floppy disk. In addition,
one must be attached.
b) In that case, what will be restored? I mean, an exact copy of the
original hard disk, with windows, my apps and documents?
Yes
Whatever was on the disk before you performed to restore will be lost.
c) If that is not the case, would you recommend me any tool for doing
that?

Thanks!
Acronis True Image is a much better product.

There are better tools, but ... since you haven't even read the basics of
using ntbackup, they probably won't do you any good. Had you bothered to
read ANYTHING about ntbackup, you wouldn't ask such a question. So, IMO
there is no other tool that can help you.
