What is the best way to manage photo data?

My wife takes more photos than a paparazzi - what is the best way to keep
them online all the time while avoiding having to scan all that data when I
do a full disk virus check? There is so much data I have to run some
utilities overnight, but putting the photos on offline storage is not an
option.

I use avg and can select folders to scan, I'm sure most virus software have
similar options?

I am well aware that I can exclude folders containing photos from the virus
check, but the question is: how can I do this safely so I am guaranteed not
to miss any form of malware that gets into the same partition or drive as the
photos.

Most virus softwares can also select file types to scan.

I do not intend to change my AV, what I wantr to know is how to create an
online repository for photos only that can't get infected, so I can exclude
that area from full disk scans.

Put the "online" depository on a DVD. ANY harddrive area CAN be infected.
