What is the best way to clean up a .PST file (Outlook2003) - I've tried SCANPST.EXE...

Hi

What is the best way to clean up my .PST file?

I've tried archiving what I can and it's still c900 MB.
I've compacted it.
I regularly run SCANPST.EXE across it... but still it keeps restarting
Outlook!

I have an Outlook2003 file that obviously has some corruption in it
because
when downloading new emails, it quite often throws an error
(that asks me if I want to inform microsoft and whether I want to
restart Outlook).

I have been advised to start again with an empty .PST file. And do
download
all the new files into it.

The problem is that I have about 40 folders plus about 30 quite complex
rules.
So rebiulding this from scratch will take a ratherhuge amount of
labour!

I suppose that I COULD export the rules, create the virgin new (empty)
PST file and import the rules.

But how do I know it isnt the rules that are corrupt and causing the
trouble ?

Or maybe there is a way to copy the folder structure but none of
the actual emails - into the new .PST

But how do I know that it isnt the folder structure that isnt corrupt?

And even if I do start again with an empty PST suppose I "archive"
everything INTO it and then use this "archived" .PST file as my mail
..PST will this work?

But how do I know that one of the emails isnt corrupt and causing all
the
trouble?

Any thoughts?
Where is the corruption most likely to have occurred?

Are there any utilities better than SCANPST.EXE for cleaning
up errors in .PST files...?

What makes you think the corruption is in the pst-file in the first place?

What is being logged to the Event Viewer?
Do things work correctly in Outlook Safe Mode?

What makes you think the corruption is in the pst-file in the first place?

The fact that it keeps crashing Outlook2003!
(This doesnt seem to happen to my colleagues)

Plus when I run SCANPST.EXE it usually finds errors...!

What is being logged to the Event Viewer?

Ah-ha that's a *good* question!
It looks like googledesktop is regularly causing trouble - though this
may be
unrelated. In any case I *LOVE* my GoogleDesktop - I cant live without
it.
But it might not like the fact that I have to copy my whole PST file
between
PCs when I work in different locations. Hmmm might be worth
uninstalling
GoogleDesktop and downloading a fresh version?? Unless that is you can
find me something that searches as well/fast as Googledesktop (which
though
fast isnt very good at filtering!)
Faulting application outlook.exe, version 11.0.8010.0, stamp 43d16d53,
faulting module googledesktopoffice.dll, version 0.0.0.0, stamp
44258f05, debug? 0, fault address 0x0002128d.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.
Do things work correctly in Outlook Safe Mode?
Dont know - How do I get that to fire up?

Google is indeed your issue. You might indeed want to check wether you are
running their latest version. FWIW; I use Windows Desktop Search myself.

What's Windows Desktop Search exactly - and how well does it work for
you?
I think I tried it a while back and didnt like it.
How does it compare with the google desktop?

There is a new version out just released. You may want to give it another try - it works very well and I was having issues with Google as well and uninstalled it.

You start Outlook with the /SAFE program switch, e.g.
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\Outlook.exe" /SAFE
