Notice the path to the file. It's in a temporary directory, a place no
real app should install to.

Clear the temporary and temporary internet folders folders. The excellent
free utility, ccleaner (www.ccleaner.com, get the "slim" build or pay
attention during install so you don't install the Yahoo toolbar) is very
helpful for this.

Then, open msconfig, locate the reference for the app, and go there and
remove it.

Put RCApp.exe in the search box in Google.

I have no idea, but legitimate apps other than web installers do not live in
temp folders, and those place files in non-temporary folders.

It's likely either malware or just badly written and unstable. In either
case you don't want it.

To me, this appears to be a dump style file of the error and not the
true EXE. Is this true???

Hi,

I found this to be related to Liveupdate for Symantec products.

I have Norton Ghost 12 installed which uses the standalone liveupdate and Internet Security 2009 which has its own built in liveupdate.

The automatic standalone liveupdate is trying to update NIS 2009 which won't happen and hence the error.

I have turned off the automatic standalone liveupdate, I now manually perform and deselect any products that it is trying to update related to NIS 2009 as this will look after its self.

To test run and prove the point, run liveupdate and allow for it to try an update of NIS 2009, then run again and only allow for it to update in my case Ghost 12.

The rcapp.exe is part of the updates installation, it will delete itself after install - I used sysintenals Process Monitor to trace the exe creation and its path as on my vista system I could not find the file either.

Hope this help,

Rob

This app appears to run during the Norton Internet Security 2009 update
process and should go away when the process is complete. However, if the
process doesn't complete b/c the app crashes...
Are you running Norton Internet Security? Is it the 2009 version? Are
you able to get updates to the product if you manually start the update
process from the UI in the software?
Did you already figure this out? and perhaps maybe already have
contacted symantec?

Note: you were correct about the mdmp, that was created to report the
issue via WER, although there seems to be an error with the way you
typed it... There's not actually a space in RCAP p.exe.mdmp is there?

hi,
i've been having the same problem. tried to clean through running
exploration from %temp% but it's not solving the problem.

since i read your post, i tried to contact symantec (i am using NIS2009) but
the support technician said it's not norton related. and he said, this might
be caused by microsoft's or my pc. he said that even after he tried to
disable my NIS and waited, that RCApp.exe didn't show up. so it's got nothing
to do with NIS.

any other suggestion? i am not a person with computer knowledge background,
and this problem is really annoying, so any help would be much appreciated.

thx.

hi,
i've been having the same problem. found this when i was googling around. in
fact, this is the only article that i find exactly the same as my problem.

i've tried the ccleaner.exe, it didn't solve the matter. the RCApp.exe.mdmp
error still exists. and since i saw ms-daveh's reply, i tried to contact
symantec (yes, i'm using NIS2009) but the support technician checked
everything and came to solution that NIS isn't the cause. he suggested that i
contact microsoft, or even contact my pc vendor to check if there's anything
wrong.

at this point, i dunno what else to do. i'm not a person with computer
knowledge background, and this problem is really annoying. so any help will
be much appreciated. thanks.
