What is IEFix

D

Dave Telling

I have IE6 on a W2K Pro (SP3) system. Two weeks ago, I got hammered by
some spyware (apparently). I ran Spybot & Spy Sweeper, my McAfee
viruscan is up to date. Now, IE6 will not open any websites. I get the
'The page cannot be displayed" error if I type in a URL, and if I type
in the numeric address, I get a message box that says that IE could not
open the search page. I can ping out with no problems, I have checked
(and our IT people have checked) my hosts file. Netscape 4.7 runs, but I
don't like it - it displays many websites improperly & some not at all.
I have re-installed IE6 several times, uninstalled & re-installed the SP
for W2K, but no joy. I recently saw a reference to "IEFix" in another
posting, but I can't find out where or what it is. The poster said that
he could not access any websites until he ran IEFix, so I am definitely
interested. Does anyone know where it might be found?

Here's a regfile that will restore the Windows defaults
for practically everything Search-related.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/IEFIX.reg

Save to disk, close all browser windows, double click the
file and answer 'yes' when asked to merge.

Restart your computer, and test your browser.

Uh Oh, here we go,
Had this same problem. You have to do a basic "find" in
the registry editor. Type in "search" in the find box and
keep hitting F3 until you get to entries like "search"
and "default search page" and so on. Make sure it is
msn.com, not something else. It is a very time consuming
task, but it will get what was modified by the spyware off
of your sys.

There will also be little prograns running that will re-
enter this into the registry everytime you boot. So hit
crt-alt-del to see what programs are running. Write them
down, then go to "run" sysedit, tab to startup, then de-
check the ones you are supicious of (IECHECK is in here),
restart and see if the prob doesn't go away. May take a
few times to completely get your sys control back. Also
try "restore back up" in sysedit.

It aint easy, it's time consuming, but it works, so good
luck.

Mike,
Thanks for your reply! Actually, before I got to this
thread, I found your reply to 'K-tel' regarding Winsock 2
repairs. I downloaded & ran the repair file & that fixed
my IE6 problem!
Thanks for taking the time to help with this.
