What is "Flash"?

This may not be the right place to ask this question but there are
soooo many experts on every aspect of compting here so forgive me if
it's the wrong group.

My grandson wants to go to a "Thomas the Tank Engine" website. When I
try to open the page I get a warning saying I need to download
something called "Flash." Being of a naturally suspicious disposition
I never install anything without knowing what it is and what it does.
I'd like to know more before installing this program. Is it spyware
for instance?

Good to ask.

Flash, and its relative Shockwave, are software from
http://www.macromedia.com/ that are commonly used for glitzy web pages
and games. They are not spyware per se, although you should look very
carefully at all the options that are checked or not checked as you
install. If you go to the macromedia site, you can poke around and check

That would be Flash Player so you can see the website complete. It is safe
to install it.

It is a plugin that allows your browser to display animation and other
multimedia features. It is made by Macromedia, and is perfectly safe to
install. It does not contain spyware or anything like that. It is made by
www.macromedia.com

Flash is a program by a reputable company(macromedia) and
is needed for many web based applets and online games
their is no need to worry,Macromedia also makes a program
called shochwave which you may be prompted to download at
some point no need to worry about that either.
