What is computer id?

Just what is Computer id? I notice that sometimes when I install a new
program up pops a box asking what the Computers's is. Other times the box
comes up with the ID already filled in. I've never looked to see if the
same id is used by all programs or not. If it is I suppose that I should
make a note of it unless it's displayed somewhere within windows that I can
look it up.
 
Most likely whatever you want.
Some programs assume installation on multiple computers and an ID helps
identify which computer.
