What is best free site promotion site?

There are a number of sites which offer free site promotion - usually in
return for placing a link to their service on your web page.

Anybody have any preferences for one site over another?

Most of these sites are just spammer food and they can result in search
engine penalties - avoid them and submit to legitimate directories: that
gets you a link that (usually) doesn't even require the reciprocal
link).

Beyond that, search for sites with related content, visit them so you
can say something about the site, and send an individualized email
offering a reciprocal link. BUT! If they don't answer, let it go... I
am really getting sick of those "This is the third time I have emailed
you asking for a reciprocal link" emails -- if I want to link to you, I
will do it IN MY OWN TIME and if I don't want to link to you I don't owe
you anything -- you wrote to me, remember?

Hi Dave,

What I hate is when other sites (whiteout asking)
link to one of my pages (not the home page)
and it causes my bandwidth usage to be 8-12 Gigs
a month mostly for that one page... Oh Well.....

Don,

Most people would kill for inward links that give that kind of traffic:-)
Why not sell something on that page or stick some Adsense on it - it should
never be difficult to monetize traffic.

Hi Jon,

I made myself a promise that I would never advertise on that site..
It is just for fun and testing stuff... A playground so to speak.

Hi,

Adsense is a google program - you've seen the adwords ads to the right of
your page when you do a search on google. Adsense places these ads on your
own pages and pay you X amount of money per click. Here's an example page
that uses adwords on the 4guysfromrolla site
http://aspnet.4guysfromrolla.com/articles/090104-1.aspx the sponsored links
at the top. Read through the info here
https://www.google.com/adsense/

Bottom line - if you have interesting content that attracts users adsense
should make you some money without any extra work on your part, you can sign
up for free and see if it works for you.
